Illegal Alien Dies of COVID-19 While in Federal Custody

EDINBURG, TX – A citizen of Mexico has died of COVID-19 while in federal custody in south Texas according to the Border Patrol.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is saddened to report the death of a Mexican national on Monday morning in a South Texas hospital.

On July 18, 2020, Border Patrol agents assigned to the Rio Grande City station apprehended an adult Mexican national male who informed agents he felt ill and believed he had a fever. Agents rendered aid and transported the man to a local hospital directly from the field encounter location. Medical personnel determined the man was positive for COVID-19 and experiencing symptoms related to the virus. Days after being admitted, medical staff determined the man had a low oxygen saturation that required sedation and placement on a ventilator. On August 24, 2020, the man passed away. The Mexican consulate was notified of the man’s passing and will assist in notifying the family.
