Shannon Health System Debuts Air-Med 2 Airplane

SAN ANGELO, TX – Shannon Medical Center and Med-Trans debuted the new Air-Med 2 on Wednesday.

The two companies came together at the San Angelo Regional Airport, on August 19, to debut their new King Air 90.

The purpose of this plane is to work side by side with the already present Air-Med 1. Air-Med 1 is a Bell 407 Helicopter that is used to transport cardiac, trauma, medical, pediatric and burn patients to Shannon if they are in critical condition.

The purpose for Air-Med 2 is for patients who need to be moved to another hospital from Shannon. Instead of a Helicopter rides, patients are moved via plane.

AirMed 2 includes unique features especially designed for this aircraft that are not standard on all models – further increases safety of the aircraft.

  • Synthetic Vision – allows the pilot to see the terrain in front and to the side of the aircraft.
  • Integrated traffic system – Makes traffic avoidance easier by telling the pilot where traffic is and
  • what needs to be done to avoid it.
  • Enhanced weather radar – allows the pilot to see weather in front and to the side of the
  • aircraft.
  • Nexrad Radar that allows the pilot to upload the flight plan and see how weather will affect the
  • flight at greater distances.

AirMed 1 will still be stationed at the hospital. AirMed 2 is stationed at San Angelo Regional Airport and has its own dedicated crew available 24/7.

Shannon and Med-Trans agreement is that Med-Trans owns the plane and will allow Shannon to use it as long as they provide the medical equipment and dedicated staff for patient care.

Medical crew on each flight includes a critical care nurse and flight paramedic who hold advanced certifications.
