AUSTIN, TX – Governor Greg Abbott Monday directed the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), and the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to test 100% of residents and staff in Texas nursing homes.
According to his Facebook page, the Governor instructed HHSC, TDEM, and DSHS to develop and implement a plan based on the guidance of Vice President Mike Pence and Doctor Deborah Birx.
"The State of Texas is working to rapidly expand our testing capacity—especially among vulnerable populations in Texas nursing homes," said Governor Abbott.
"This important collaboration among HHSC, TDEM, and DSHS will ensure that any potential clusters of COVID-19 cases in nursing homes are quickly detected and contained."

Funny, with how rampant the disease is in prisons, you'd figure that along with nursing homes, we'd see if we could get those juveniles in the custody of Texas and those guarding them tested too. It's been a good 15 years since Greg Abbott caught any flak for ignoring those abused or neglected in that system. He makes headlines for this step and at the same time he has so much more that he could be doing. Would it have been that much harder to order in his decree that prisoners and guards both be tested in the adult and juvenile prison systems, or are they afraid of what that would reflect. Take one look at what TJJD posts on their website about Coronavirus response, really only one guard at Giddings has tested positive and none of the youth in that system have it? Somebody's lying.
