‘Raygun: The Musical’ Canceled After Legal Threats from Viral Olympic Breakdancer

SYDNEY, Australia — Raygun: The Musical, a parody production inspired by Olympic breakdancer Rachael Gunn, known as “Raygun,” was canceled just hours before its debut Saturday after her legal team intervened.

The musical, written by Australian comedian Steph Broadbridge, was set to premiere at Sydney’s Kinselas venue and aimed to satirize Gunn’s Olympic journey. Gunn’s unique routine, including a kangaroo hop and backward rolls, gained viral attention during the Paris Olympics but failed to score points in her matches.

Broadbridge announced on Instagram that Gunn’s lawyers had contacted the venue, threatening legal action over concerns that the show could damage Gunn’s brand and confuse audiences into believing she was affiliated with the production.

“I want to assure everyone that she will not be part of the show,” Broadbridge said, adding she hoped Gunn might attend.

Tickets, priced at $6.45, were refunded, and proceeds initially intended for a women’s shelter charity were lost. The Eventbrite listing for the production has since been updated to reflect the title "Breaking: The Musical."

“This was supposed to be me trying to make you feel like the icon I believe you can be,” Broadbridge said.
