SAN ANGELO, TX - Global elections, sports tournaments, and pop culture dominated Google’s search trends in 2024, with the tech giant releasing its annual “Year in Search” report Tuesday.
The most searched term globally was Copa América, showing the widespread online interest in major soccer and cricket events throughout the year.
Other top sports-related queries included the UEFA European Championship and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. In the U.S., major trends included searches about the presidential election, excessive heat, and the Olympic Games.
In its “people” category, President-elect Donald Trump led searches in 2024, followed by Catherine, Princess of Wales, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif. Liam Payne, Toby Keith, and O.J. Simpson, all notable figures who passed away in 2024, also topped searches.
Entertainment queries centered on Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” the year’s most searched movie, and Netflix’s series “Baby Reindeer.” Music searches were dominated by Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.”
Unusual trends also emerged. For example, the Olympic village’s chocolate muffin recipe, linked to Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen, was a global culinary sensation. The New York Times’ “Connections” puzzle led gaming searches, while online aesthetics like “mob wife aesthetic” gained traction in the U.S.
Google collected search data from Jan. 1 through Nov. 23, reporting the highest spikes in interest compared to the previous year.
