SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State Rams honored veterans at their game against Central Washington today at LeGrand Stadium. The highlight came when a B-52H bomber crew from Minot Air Force Base executed a perfect time-over-target (TOT) flyover just as the Star-Spangled Banner concluded. The B-52 passed over San Angelo at an impressive 1,000 feet above ground level.
Throughout San Angelo, residents called in with curiosity about the iconic B-52, often nicknamed the "BUFF" (Big Ugly Fat F-r). The aircraft made the journey from Minot AFB in North Dakota, known for its especially demanding conditions for service members. B-52s are based at both Minot AFB and Barksdale AFB in Bossier City, Louisiana.
In addition to the flyover, Angelo State celebrated veterans with a lineup of live entertainment at the Ram Jam, featuring Texas Country artist Kyle Garrett and the southern rock band All About Alice. Active-duty military, their families, veterans, and retirees enjoyed free admission to the game with military ID.
Earlier this week, reports surfaced of a B-52H with a unique paint scheme spotted north of Abilene. In the 1970s and early ’80s, B-52Ds, known as "Big Belly" Buffs, were stationed at Dyess AFB in Abilene. Today, Dyess is home to the B-1B Lancer, and it will host the next-generation B-21 stealth bomber in the coming decade.
