HOLLYWOOD — The Last of Us has released a trailer for its second season.
The first season of The Last of Us ended just as the video game the show is based on ended.
Joel Miller, played by Pedro Pascal, gets Ellie (Bella Ramsey), across the United States, surviving attacks from “The Infected” and desperate people.
Joel finds out the Fireflies, a resistance movement, planned on killing Ellie to try and develop a cure as she was immune to the Cordyceps infection. He kills the freedom fighters and saves Ellie.
The Infected are people who have succumbed to the Cordyceps infection. Cordyceps are real and are commonly referred to as the "zombie ant fungus." In season one, the first scene is a discussion on what could happen if the Cordyceps mutate and are able to survive in a human.
Now, a trailer has dropped for season two. The official synopsis for The Last of Us Season II reads:
“After five years of peace following the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie’s collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”
Anyone who has played the game, The Last of Us Part II, knows that Joel gets killed by Abby, played in the new season by Kaitlyn Dever. The show is not following the video games scene for scene and will focus, like in season one, on the character’s backstories. One complaint from the first season was "not enough infected" which, by the looks of the trailer, won't be an issue this time around.
The video game’s creator, Neil Druckmann, is involved with the show along with Craig Mazin, who created HBO’s Chernobyl, which followed the real-life story of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
The cast of The Last of Us Season II includes:
- Pedro Pascal (Gladiator II, Game of Thrones) as Joel Miller
- Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones, His Dark Materials) as Ellie
- Gabriel Luna (Terminator: Dark Fate, Temple Grandin) as Tommy
- Rutina Wesley (True Blood, Outsiders) as Maria
- Kaitlyn Dever (Dopesick, Beautiful Boy) as Abby
- Isabela Merced (Alien: Romulus, Transformers: The Last Knight) as Dina
- Jeffery Wright (The Batman, Westworld) as Isaac Dixon
Catherine O’Hara (Home Alone, Schitt’s Creek) has been cast in an undisclosed role.
The Last of Us Season II is set to premiere on MAX sometime in 2025.
