SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Chamber of Commerce Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) has selected a local artist for the creation of a captivating mural on the interior wall of the San Angelo Visitor Center, 418 W Avenue B. Following a call for artists, the DMO received submissions from an array of skilled local artists, each showcasing their unique vision and creative prowess.
After careful consideration and a meticulous selection process by a selection committee, one artist's submission stood out as the perfect embodiment of San Angelo's vibrant spirit and rich cultural, and Western heritage. The chosen artist's identity will be revealed at a press conference scheduled for Thursday, August 10, at 10 a.m. in the San Angelo Visitor Center.
“The San Angelo Chamber of Commerce is proud of San Angelo’s designation as the 'Visual Arts Capital of Texas.' This mural project in our world-famous visitor’s center will not only celebrate this designation but will also inform visitors of our rich history and of the great things to do in our city," said San Angelo Chamber of Commerce President Walt Koenig.
Members of the press, local dignitaries, art enthusiasts, and the public are all invited to attend and witness this exciting milestone. The mural, which will begin painting on September 1, will serve as a point of attraction for tourists and locals alike, offering a visual narrative that speaks to the heart and soul of The Visual Arts Capital of Texas, San Angelo.
The San Angelo Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) operates the Visitor Center that was revamped earlier this year with the addition of a gift store showcasing locally-produced products. The building is dedicated to promoting San Angelo as a travel destination, showcasing its rich history, cultural diversity, and unique attractions. In April, Koenig announced the initiative to have a competition for the mural. In addition, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts designates an "artist of the quarter" who is invited to display his or her art at the Center each quarter.
The Visitors Center was built in 2005 in the distinctive building located on the Concho river. The building’s facade is made of limestone with Brock accents. Tall windows line the back of the center facing the river. The San Angelo Health Foundation and a large conference room are located on the west side of the Visitors Center and the Chamber of Commerce Office is on the east side.
Supporting local artists and fostering community engagement is a way the DMO contributes to the city's flourishing cultural scene, inviting visitors to experience the magic of San Angelo.
A press conference announcing the commission is scheduled for Thursday, August 10 at 10:00 a.m. inside the Visitors Center.
