SAN ANGELO – As the Cajuns say, 'Laissez les bons Temps Rouler;' 'Let the good times roll' until Wednesday anyway. Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday (Greasy Tuesday actually) is the time to party before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent in the Catholic Christian world.
The season of Lent is the 40 days of fasting before the Easter season on the Christian Calendar and the Tuesday before the beginning of Lent has become a time to party or indulge before 'giving up' excesses for Lent.
This year, Mardi Gras is Tuesday, Feb. 21. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, Feb, 22 and runs through Wednesday, April 5, 2023. Holy Thursday is April 6, 2023 marking the beginning of the Easter season.
"Jesus is himself the way, and therefore, both in the liturgical journey (of Lent) and in the journey of the synod, the church does nothing other than enter ever more deeply and fully into the mystery of Christ the savior," Pope Francis said in his message for Lent, which begins Feb. 22 for Latin-rite Catholics.
The faithful usually observe fasting on Fridays of Lent. That can include refraining from eating meat on Fridays. The tradition encourages Catholics to eat only one meal on Fridays and area Catholic Churches have Fish Fry meals each Friday evening of Lent.
