Abilene Zoo Welcomes First Baby of 2023

 

ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Zoo welcomed their first baby of 2023.

According to the Abilene Zoo, on Jan. 1, 2023, the first baby of the year born at the zoo. The prehensile tailed porcupine was born on New Year's Day and is named Triscuit's.

Baby porcupines are called porcupettes.  Fun facts about porcupines include:

  • Porcupines are covered in about 30,000 quills. They cannot throw or shoot their quills. ... 
  • While porcupines spend most of the time on the ground, they are good climbers and regularly climb trees in search of food and occasionally even build nests in trees. They are also good swimmers.
  • Porcupines are nearsighted and slow-moving, capable of reaching 2 mph over short distances (compared to a squirrel’s 20 mph and a deer’s 30). But they do have a great sense of smell.
  •  In the Wild porcupine live on average 5-7 years. In Human Care they can live up to 18 years.
