Plan on Shooting Off Fireworks for the Holidays? Here's Where It's Legal

SAN ANGELO, TX – The Christmas and New Year holiday season is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of the year and spend times with loved ones. What better way to do that than by lighting fireworks. 

The problem with fireworks in the late months of the year is of course the cold, windy, and dry weather. These conditions enhance the chances of grass and structure fires starting. 

Here in Tom Green County it is legal to shoot fireworks as long as you are not in the city limits unless county commissioners enact a burn ban. 

Taylor County on the other hand has decided to take a different route. According to KTXS, the Taylor County commissioners signed an order Tuesday prohibiting the sale and use of aerial fireworks for both holidays due to drought conditions.

Counties such as Runnels, Coke, Concho,and Schleicher are currently under a burn ban which completely prohibits the outdoor burning and so fireworks are illegal. 

Irion and Sterling County ask that if you are shooting fireworks to do the following: 

• Do not get intoxicated and light fireworks. 
• Always have water and dirt available in case any fire starts.
• Be aware of your surroundings
• Make sure children stay away unless they have adult supervision. 
• Call sheriff's office prior to shooting to alert them of calls that could be made due to loud explosion sounds. 

Remember if you do decided to shoot fire works be safe, have fun, and do it legally. If you don't you could be stuck with a class c misdemeanor and a fine upwards to $500.
