WATCH: Christoval Firecracker 5K Kicks Off Independence Day Celebrations

CHRISTOVAL, TX -- The annual Christoval Firecracker 5K run drew hundreds of participants to the small town on the south Concho River Thursday kicking off Independence Day celebrations in the Concho Valley.

Organizers say they had their largest crowd ever with 300 participants in the 5K and one mile fun runs.  Medals were awarded to age group winners and finisher medals were given to everyone who completed the course.

New this year was a 30 mile bike which drew a couple dozen riders.  The bicycle course was out and back 15 miles down Toenail Trail.

Participants were then treated to a barbeque lunch sponsored by the Christoval Volunteer Fire Department at the Community Center on Main St. and they were selling brisket by the pound.

The annual event is a fundraiser for the VFD.

There will be a fireworks display in Christoval across from the high school beginning at dusk.
