5 Songs That Mark Chesnutt will Sing for San Angelo Thursday Night

SAN ANGELO, TX — Mark Chesnutt is performing at the Whiskey River Saloon, 125 E. Concho Ave., in downtown San Angelo Thursday night. This is his first performance in San Angelo in a long, long time.

The 54-year-old grew up in an era between the Baby Boomers and Generation X. Sometimes called the “Jones” generation, it is fitting that his repertoire of original music cuts a unifying message between the two generations. He’s like a George Strait traditionalist with a little snark.

Chesnutt’s first hit was in 1990, 27 years ago. His Too Cold at Home record charted five hit singles, back when charting hit singles meant actual record sales. “Brother Jukebox” was the first of the five hits.

Two years later, Chesnutt charted “Old Flames Have New Names,” “I’ll Think of Something,” and “Bubba Shot the Jukebox.”

In 1994’s record, A New Way to Live, Chesnutt charted a song most Texans remember. It’s about divorce and not about Dallas.

In 1996, Chesnutt left his major record label, MCA, and joined the start-up Decca Records. He was the flagship artist. In 1997, at Decca, he charted another hit, “Thank God for Believers.”

Last year, Chesnutt released his 15th studio record, Tradition Lives. The record, produced by an independent label with his longtime producer, Jimmy Ritchey, has a traditionalist sound, best described by the first track’s name, “I’ve got a Quarter in my Pocket” or the second track, “Is it Still Cheating.”

About the record, Chesnutt said it was all about staying true to his traditionalist country music roots.

"I'm not chasing radio or following trends - I am doing what I do best. The title came before the album was ever recorded. I've never been a bro-country singer. I've always been a traditionalist and wanted to make a point that this was traditional music," Chesnutt told the Digital Journal about his latest record.
