SAN ANGELO, TX — If you're looking for some family-friendly, affordable entertainment this weekend, then head on out to San Angelo Lions Balloon Fest.
The San Angelo Lions will be hosting their first Balloon Festival at the corner of Johnson and University streets this Friday, June 9, through Sunday, June 11.
The San Angelo Lions' Spokesperson Rosalind Payne said, "There are eight 'Lions' clubs here (in San Angelo) and the Balloon Fest and our pancake breakfast are a joint venture of all the local Lions Clubs. Any profits will be going to various charities so we can continue to fulfill our motto which is 'We Serve'."
Besides a number of hot air balloon activities, there are several other events for guests to watch and/or partake in including a 1k/5k fun walk/run, a Car, Truck, and Bike Show, a pancake breakfast Saturday morning, a martial arts exhibition, and of course, no festival would be complete without live music.
The balloons will take off from the John Glenn Jr. High School practice football field near Johnson Street and University Ave. Vendors, kids' zone, and others, including an eyeglass station, will be set up on the parking lot side. Payne added, "There will be approximately 50 vendors with booths offering food, crafts, non profit information, t-shirts, and much more."
"We have 18 balloonists and their crews signed up to participate. This is the first event here in San Angelo since the hot air balloons were at the Fiesta years ago. Most of the balloon competition flights will be right there at the field and they will have games with the balloons there as well," said Payne.
"For those wanting more information on the organization, there will be a Lions tent at the Balloon Fest giving out information on all of our Lions Clubs," she said.
Because the event is on San Angelo ISD property, there alcohol, weapons, drugs, and smoking are forbidden.
