SAN ANGELO, TX — Sid Walker, director of Civic Events for the City of San Angelo, was beaming ear-to-ear last month. He had to keep it close to his chest because not all details had been finalized. The Houston-based rock-blues band ZZ Top was coming to San Angelo.
The band, whose popular hits include La Grange, Tush, Sharp Dressed Man, Cheap Sunglasses, and Legs will perform at the Foster Communications Coliseum May 22 at 8 p.m.

Landing ZZ Top in San Angelo, considered a top tier act, is a major coup, and a testament to Walker’s methodical pursuit of big name talent for the City’s venues. A history of the ability to sell tickets in advance helps, Walker said. The Beach Boys almost filled the coliseum. Then, the Travis Tritt concert saw over two-thirds of its tickets sold before the day of the performance. That helped convince other promoters to take larger risks on San Angelo.
Walker keeps an eye on comparable cities, too. “When I saw them [ZZ Top] book Abilene last year, I knew we were going to get a shot soon,” he said.
Tickets go on sale March 3 at 10 a.m. at Stubwire.com and in person at Blair’s Western Wear and Chelsea’s Street Pub, 4310 Buffalo Gap Rd., in Abilene. Tickets will cost between $29.50 and $69.50 according to the Plano-based promoter Din Promotions.
