SAN ANGELO, TX - There's great news for Zack Walther Band fans. Not only is the band playing the Blaine's Pub stage this Saturday, Jan. 14, but they also have an 'official' EP release in just a few days.
The three piece New Braunfels Texas-based band consists of Zack Walther, lead vocals, harmonica and guitars; Matthew Briggs, drums, glockenspiel, and tambourine; and Corey Shetler is their bass player. However, for these next couple of gigs, it will just be the power duo of Zack and Matt.
Most people picture a clock when they hear the word 'glockenspiel,' but singer/songwriter Walther explained, "It resembles a Xylophone, but it's got the same notes as a piano with probably three or four octaves on it and you hit it with a mallet. He's (Matt) been playing it off and on since junior high."
Walther and Briggs have been making music for many years (click here), and share a strong creative bond.
Walther was proud to announce, "Our newest EP is called 'Get Out of Your Head' and the title track, the song that we're first featuring as our first single to radio, is a song that I wrote with a buddy of mine, Adam Hood, and also Rodney Crowell."

He added, "When my wife and I lost our daughter Lennon, it's a song about learning how to deal with that as a married couple, being able to kind of give support ,and learning how to adjust to that basically, which is not an easy thing to do. It was just something to where I kind of got to a point where I wanted to share with Adam. He jumped on board, and, within a week, wrote the second verse. I then went down to Nashville, and we kind of polished and reworked it, making it the song it is today with Rodney."
Walther said this is a song that sticks out on the record because "it's a little more bluesy."
"The record itself is a project Matt and I decided to do as a two piece, not in a sense that it's only two instruments we're playing, but we're the two that are actively playing and recording on the whole thing. We've taken all the experience from the previous records we've done, and sort of really diving into this one, experimented with tones, sounds, and different ideas. Even though it's an EP, I think it's one of the best we've done. The idea is we'll be recording another five or six songs this spring and then release the next full length record sometime this summer."
As for their latest release, fans will be pleased to know there are five new songs, and, included are five separate commentary tracks as well.
"Matt kind of came up with the idea that we should do some kind of commentary like they have on TV or with DVD's," said Walther. "It's kind of like a director's cut on a DVD where they talk you through the inspiration for the movie. We tell you how and why the song came about. We'd never heard of or seen another band do this before, and thought it would be a neat way to explain things. In the commentary, we not only talk about the meaning of the song, but what different techniques we use in recording and shed some light on the magic in the studio."
The five singles are as follows: 1) Bad Girl, 2) Get out of Your Head, 3) What Kind of Man, 4) Doing Things My Way, and 5) The Fight.
For the majority of their shows, the band has been live streaming on Facebook, and Walther said, "That has a lot to do with Melissa our manager. She goes on the road quite a bit with us, films, and sells the merchandise during the shows. She has a lot to do with the idea for the live streaming we do with our shows, and I haven't heard of any other bands doing it. We don't show the whole show, just usually the first part."
So, if you have never seen the ZWB perform and would like a sneak peek of what is to come this Saturday at Blaine's Pub, check out the band's live stream on Facebook (click here) Friday evening when the band plays at the Lone Star Bar in Midland. For the Midland show, they go on a little earlier, around 9 p.m., but the Blaine's show will start around 10 p.m.
Even though the EP is not officially out, you can still pick up a copy at the club before the official release on the 17th. He added, "Get Out of Your Head" is also now up for pre-order on iTunes and Amazon." The links are as here and here.
As for his message to his fans, Walther said, "We're proud of this and have high hopes that this record will, for our fans, and us as a band, be a major step forward in playing and songwriting. I'm an album type of guy who likes to start from the beginning and go to the end, so I'm really looking forward to getting it out to the fans this summer."
