SAN ANGELO, TX - For many years, families have flocked to Ft. Concho for its annual Halloween tours, and this year, people will be excited to learn the fort has added something new.
Rocio Moncibais, volunteer visitor's service coordinator at the fort, said, "The tour will be Monday October 24 at 8 p.m., and then the next night we've added the 'Murder Mystery' event, which is a completely new program. Our tours have always sold a lot of tickets over the years, but this year, I came up with the idea to add the new event, so hopefully we'll have a lot more people come out."
Moncibais added that for the night tour, the staff usually divides people into two groups, and a guide will take them around the site, tell them about the history of the buildings and share the many tales of paranormal activity at the fort.
"Some of our buildings are almost 150 years old, so there have been a number of deaths that have occurred here," she said.
Moncibais also said the tour includes a stop in Officers' Quarters 1, where Edith Grierson died. She was the 13-year-old-daughter of the Post Commander Benjamin Grierson. Legend has it a man was delivering flowers and he saw her sitting at the top of the stairs.
As for the rest, Moncibais said, "The Murder Mystery event will be the following night, Tuesday, October 25, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.. No tickets will be sold after 9 p.m. With paid admission, one will get a case file and then go out to the 12 different buildings and start talking to the suspects and look for the clues. It's just like a real life game of Clue."
Admission for each event is $8 for adults, and $6 for military, seniors and children, and tickets can be purchased at the Visitor's Center.
Ft. Concho is a national historic landmark and proceeds will go into its operating fund. As stated on their website, "Only with your help can we protect the future by preserving the past."
