ASU and Alumni Choir Offer Free Public Concert's This October

 

SAN ANGELO,TX- Angelo State University student and alumni choirs will celebrate October with free public concerts on Tuesday, Oct 25, at the Cactus Hotel and on Friday Oct. 28, at the Pearl on the Concho restaurant.

The ASU Singers will present “Cabaret at the Cactus” at 7:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Cactus Hotel, 36 E. Twohig Ave.

The program will include popular songs and scenes from various Tony Award-winning musicals, including:

  • Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes,”
  • Marvin Hamlisch’s “A Chorus Line,”
  • “Pippin” by Stephen Schwartz, and “Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd.”
  • A western segment will be highlighted by favorites from “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Calamity Jane” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” as well as a choral medley from Lerner & Loewe’s “Paint Your Wagon.”

Then on Oct. 28, ASU’s select alumni choir, Voices Unlimited, will showcase its new “Halloween Cocktail Party” at 7 p.m. at the Pearl on the Concho, 333 Rio Concho Drive.

Musical selections will include:

  • “We’re Havin’ A Party” from “Dracula the Musical,”
  • “Come Fly with Me,”
  • “Everybody Rejoice” from “The Wiz,”
  • “Old Devil Moon,”
  • “That Old Black Magic,”
  • Leon Russell’s sultry “Masquerade”
  • And the cult classic “Zombie Jamboree.”

Choir member Brenda Wellen and guest singer John Talley will offer a special holiday treat with their “bluesy” rendition of “Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead,” and the evening will culminate with a high-octane medley of Duke Ellington favorites.

In addition to the music, the “Halloween Cocktail Party” will feature Pearl on the Concho food and drink specials, including happy hour drink pricing and a 10 percent discount on all food orders.

Both the “Cabaret at the Cactus” and “Halloween Cocktail Party” concerts are open free to the public. The choirs are directed by Dr. Pamela Lee, ASU professor of music and director of choral activities.
