San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts to Host Fiesta-Style Celebration

SAN ANGELO, TX - If you're looking for an educational outing for the family this weekend, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, located at 1 Love Street, is the place to be. Diez y Seis de Septiembre is the celebration of Mexican Independence Day, and since the Museum features a different 'family day' theme every month, this Saturday, September 10, will feature the annual 'Family Day Fiesta.' Family Days are held on the 2nd Saturday of each month and are always free. 

Blanca Hernandez, SAMFA spokesperson for the Education department said, "The event kicks off at 10 a.m., and we will have a variety of activities for all ages. Unfortunately, Lake View and Central High Schools don't have their Mariachi programs anymore, but we are super excited to have the Lincoln Middle School Mariachi band come out. They're really good and will perform twice: once at 11 a.m., and the next at 12 p.m." 

Hernandez continued, "We also have two Folklorico groups: Grupo Folklorico will perform at 11:30 a.m., and then Ballet Azteca at 2 p.m."

The museum’s featured Snacktivity will be creating and eating homemade tortillas. Although patrons won't have the option to actually make the tortillas, they can see how it's done.

Hernandez added, "We will serve them to our guests with frijoles."

When asked if there will be a side of chile', Hernandez laughed and said, "No, but that's a good idea."

This activity will take place in the big meeting room of the museum.

For those with a creative side wanting a more hands on approach, there will be fun art activities all day in the Education Studio celebrating Grito de Dolores. Art projects include creating castanets and piñatas, designing Loteria cards (to use in the games afterwards), and creating a bell to ring in Mexico’s Independence. 

This event is family friendly, and will go from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  For those not quite ready to go home at 3 p.m., the museum galleries will be open all day.
