It takes a very special individual to be a volunteer, and for those who literally put their lives on the line, all too often, their sacrifices receive little compensation. One example are those who volunteer in smaller communities on volunteer fire departments. It's not unusual for them to rely on outdated equipment or limited water resources, but somehow they band together with other VFDs to get the job done. As a show of appreciation for the Bronte Volunteer Fire Department, local citizens have organized an event to raise money in an effort to help with their building fund.
Jeanette Larson Stewart, of Bronte Texas, said, "Eight years ago, my husband Jim and one of his associates came up with the idea to have an 'Oldies But Goodies Classic Car Show' where the proceeds would help out different charitable organizations. This year, it will be our very own volunteer fire department."
The event will take place Saturday, Aug. 20, at the old train depot, right off highway 158.
Stewart added, "In Bronte there are only two main streets, so there will be signs on the highway with directions to the event if one isn't familiar with the area."
Additionally, there is no fee to enter, but there will be a donation jar at the registration table.
Stewart said, "We prefer classic cars but welcome anybody and everybody. There will be judging by the fire department, a 'fun pick' among the participants, and a 'community pick' comprised of different members of the community with first, second, and third place prizes. Local residents and business owners from the community have donated prizes, and plaques will also be given."
Also, members of the BVFD will sell lunch, which will include burgers by donation.
"People are usually very generous," said Stewart.
The firemen will also be selling baseball caps with the 'Oldies But Goodies Car Show' logo, and Joe's Mule Barn will provide the live music.
"It's just a family friendly event," noted Stewart. "We may have 25, or we may have 75 vehicles; it just depends on what people have going on. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and by 1 p.m., everything will be over as it will be on a parking lot with no trees or shade; so feel free to bring your canopies."
Cars, trucks and vendors are welcome to participate.
As he proudly submitted his group photo, Bill Wayne Torres said, "I am very honored to be the Fire Chief and part of the leadership that is involved with this department. We have done some amazing things and have accomplished a lot in the short time that I have been here. Great bunch of guys this community has as a fire department. This is the Bronte VFD."
