Fiddlestrings 2016 Summer String Thing Features Doug Moreland

Tomorrow, musician and chainsaw artist Doug Moreland and The Flying Armadillos will take the stage during Fiddlestrings' Summer String Thing 2016 Trail to the Top Series.

"We usually play at the club yearly in their summer music series," said Moreland.

This featured artist said things haven't always been easy, but life is good considering.

"A couple of nights ago, we played a private party and broke down in Menard where we had to leave the van," said Moreland. "It's lots of juggling, but we'll be headed to San Angelo, are looking forward to it, and put on a great show."

Moreland's band is made up of four members, and instruments include a mandolin, fiddles, upright bass, guitar, and minimal drums.

"I took a few fiddle lessons, but would more so call it (learning to play) 'self determined'," Moreland explained. "I actually wanted to be a robotics engineer a long time ago, but when I realized I didn't need math to play fiddle, I started playing in 1994 and have been on the road ever since."

In August 2015, the multi-dimensional Country Music entertainer released "Bring Back The Swing," the ninth of his fully independent albums. The album captures Moreland's light-hearted take on the seriousness of life. His styling still gathers influence from the western swing of Bob Wills and the easy-going spirit of Jimmy Buffett, mixed with humor the likes of Roger Miller. Although some of the band's older tunes are not in print any longer, the newer music can be downloaded on iTunes.

Moreland said, "The set will last around two hours and end close to 10:30 p.m. or 11 p.m., and a good time will be had by all."

Besides enjoying the band's brand of "Western Swing," event goers may want to get there early to check out some of Moreland's chainsaw carvings and the intricate leather work created by Randy, the band's bass player.
