You never know who is going to pass through San Angelo.
Late Thursday night, revelers at Blaine’s Pub, 10 W. Harris Ave., got a rare treat. At around 11:30 p.m., in through the door walked legendary country music recording artist Jack Ingram.
Ingram honed his musical chops on the 1990s-era Texas country music circuit, on which Blaine’s Pub quickly became a part upon opening in 1997.
You may recall many of Ingram’s more popular tunes, including “Wherever You Are” (#1 on US Country charts in 2005) or “Barefoot and Crazy” (#10 in 2009).
Blaine’s bartender said about 30 patrons were in the bar late Thursday evening when a man walked in solo and sat at the end of the bar. “He ordered a Miller Lite and a shot of Jack,” said bartender Tristan Granzin.
Granzin said he was suspicious the man was Jack Ingram, and when he took a closer look, he convinced himself it was. Soon, others in the bar were abuzz about the celebrity at the end of the bar.
Granzin said Ingram requested a tour of the bar and shared many of the stories of Blaine Martin, the late founder of the San Angelo pub.
“Jeremy McComb had just finished his solo acoustic show and invited Ingram ito play a song,” Granzin said.
To the patrons’ delight, Ingram obliged. His song selection? Jack Ingram’s cult classic “The King of San Angelo,” the song he’s played at venues around the world making little ‘ol San Angelo infamous in the country music scene.
“He rode a Ferris Wheel for 25 hours to raise money. He gave all the food and the money he raised to the city so they wouldn’t send him to jail for his fifth DUI,” Ingram said of Blaine Martin as he introduced the song about the bar’s founder.
Why was Ingram in San Angelo all by himself Thursday night? “I don’t know, I didn’t ask,” Granzin said. “Maybe his car broke down.” Or maybe he was traveling around Texas reminiscing about old times.
