May the 4th Be With You and the Revenge of the 5th

Star Wars fans showed their support and love yesterday for the cultural icon on Star Wars Day: May the 4^th Be With You, and will continue to show that support today, Revenge of the 5th, which is pun on the Star Wars movie Revenge of the Sith. Today is the day fans like to let "their evil sides" come out.

Star Wars has transcended generations, and, according to starwars.com, on May the 4^th, people celebrate the galaxy far, far away, and remember why the film series is great for modern mythology. Many fans will wait for hours in line just to see the additions to the saga being released. Not to mention, there's something special about the way people come together and talk about Star Wars. It is a topic fans across the nation embrace and celebrate because of the memorable story line, mixed with the imagination that brought about different characters and creatures that established a cultural treasure.

The unofficial holiday was first celebrated in 1979, after the first woman British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher won the election. There is question whether or not fans should officially thank Margaret for the celebration of Star Wars Day; it all started with an ad printed in the London Evening News in 1979, which read, “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations.” Additionally, once the Internet connected all Star Wars fans, May the 4^th became an annual tradition.

The first Star Wars film, Episode IV, “A New Hope,” released in the U.S. on May 25, 1977. George Lucas’s birthday is May 14^th. Therefore, May the 4^th takes everything Star Wars and mashes into one day. Plus, many fans believe May the 4^th Be With You is a perfect play on words.

Star Wars is more than just the Skywalker family. It goes into detail about the light and dark side of the Force. Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Yoda, and many more characters have influenced the lives of many people in the past generations, and have left a lasting mark.

“Do or do not, there is no try,” was a quote from Master Yoda that coaches used many times during inspirational sports speeches. Teachers also post this quote on their walls.  

In San Angelo yesterday, Parrot’s Head was the one place that decided to embrace Star Wars Day, and staff decorated the bar with everything Star Wars. They brought in a DJ and handed out light sabers to many customers. Staff also held a costume contest and gave out fun prizes to those who dressed up. The staff dressed up in Star Wars Character costumes and T-shirts that said, “Pretty fly for a Jedi.”

Over 200 people came out and showed their love for the local bar and Star Wars-themed night. Two people, dressed as Mandalorians Devin and Doc Ledbetter, had gotten engaged earlier in the afternoon before coming to celebrate Star Wars Day at Parrot’s Head.

“It just seemed like the perfect day to do it,” said Doc about his decision to pop the question on Star Wars Day. “It’s a battle of good versus evil, and its something fun and relatable. I grew up with Star Wars, and now our kids are into it and love it with us.”

If fans have a say, Star Wars will be celebrated for years to come. The film series helped mold a generation.
