Tonight at 7:30 p.m., the San Angelo Symphony will be performing, "Disney in Concert: Tale as Old as Time" at the Angelo State University Junell Center. To help these magical Disney songs come to life, the symphony will be accompanied by four singers during the show. The vocal soloists include Andrew Johnson, Whitney Claire Kaufman, Juliana Hansen and John DeLisa.
This Disney in Concert production is perfect for the whole family, and will feature well-loved music and high-definition film clips from some of Disney’s most treasured films, while the orchestra and singers preform.
Hector Guzman, the maestro for the San Angelo Symphony for over 12 years, is very proud of the musicians in the orchestra. He said, “As you can hear, this has become a fine orchestra with good professional musicians.”
There will be about 70 people in the orchestra tonight who will bring beloved magical Disney songs to life. With the company of the four solo vocalists, the show is expected to be overpowering, moving and enchanting.
The four vocalists have traveled nationally and internationally performing Disney Brand shows. The singers arrived in San Angelo this morning and began a dress rehearsal at 10 a.m. with the San Angelo Symphony.
While the symphony has been practicing the show for two days, the singers will rehearse with the orchestra for two hours before that actual performance.
When Guzman and Johnson were asked if they were nervous or anxious about tonight’s performance, here's what they had to say.
“The word is not nervous," Guzman said. "I am excited. The music creates a world of its own. The combination of the singers with the films and the music live is very exciting.”
Johnson added, “These performances have become very common. I wouldn’t say that there is anxiousness or nervousness about the show; it’s more like excitement. It’s a positive feeling.”
Although the singers have been performing this same show for years, every new city they come to creates a new experience for them. Johnson stated, “We’re in a new space, in a new town with a new orchestra, so it means a new show even though we’ve done it a billion times before.”
For people who wish to attend tonight's performance, tickets will be available at the door.
Disney films that have been incorporated into the show include:
- Tangled
- Mulan
- Aladdin
- The Little Mermaid
- Beauty and the Beast
- Sleeping Beauty
- Cinderella
- The Jungle Book
- Hercules
- The Princess and the Frog
- Frozen
