10 Cloverfield Lane Icon Cinema’s $5 Tuesday Spring Break Movie Pick

With spring break under way, people who decided to stay in San Angelo may be looking for something inexpensive to do. A trip to Icon Cinema on $5 Tuesday is definitely a top option, and this week, San Angelo LIVE! suggests 10 Cloverfield Lane. This flick will keep San Angelo moviegoers on the edge of their seat, and wondering what’s real and what’s not.

This Fantasy/Mystery tells the story of Michelle, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who makes an important decision that leads her on a road trip away from all she knows. Not too long after she leaves town, however, she’s involved in a horrific rollover crash, and later wakes up to find herself shackled to a makeshift bed in an underground bunker. Her captor, or savior, Howard, played by John Goodman, tells Michelle when she attempts to leave that the world is under attack, and the air is unbreathable after a massive chemical attack. Her only hope: to remain inside with Howard and another man who worked for him over the years, Emmett, played by John Gallagher, Jr. Soon Michelle and Emmett learn Howard’s true intentions, and Michelle finds out what’s really taking place outside the bunker.

Expert movie script writers say a good story grabs the audience with something astounding within the first scene of a movie. Well, the writers of this script definitely aim to please. What’s interesting about this movie is the mixture of genres. It’s a Suspense/Thriller meets Science Fiction meets Fantasy/Mystery. Interestingly, this blending works well. Also, by the end of the 10 Cloverfield Lane, the audience can tie the movie to its predecessor; however, for those who have yet to see it, I’ll let them figure that one out.

Although 10 Cloverfield Lane came in at No. 7 at the Box Office and only raked in $3.2 million its opening weekend, critics, out of 141 reviews counted, gave the flick a 7.4 out of 10, or 90 percent, on the TOMATOMETER. Moviegoers gave it a 4 out of 5, or 85 percent, based on 21,095 user ratings.

Critics described the movie as, “Smart, solidly crafted, and palpably tense, 10 Cloverfield Lane makes the most of its confined setting and outstanding cast -- and suggests a new frontier for franchise filmmaking.”

This is one of those movies that requires outstanding sound, so San Angeloans will want to check out 10 Cloverfield Lane in the Iconic theater. Of course, they’ll need some all-you-can-eat popcorn, all-you-can-drink soda and a bit of candy to finalize the experience. Based on all the above, San Angelo LIVE! gives this flick a 5 out of 5 stars.
