Washington D.C. Rock 'n' Roll trio Fellowcraft have released their debut album Get Up Young Phoenix to rave reviews, said a press release Tuesday. The trio is comprised of Jon Ryan (JR) MacDonald on guitar, Brian Nelson-Palmer on drums, and Brandon Williams on bass.
One of the songs on the album prominently features the city of San Angelo along with storied landmarks such as Old Christoval Road and Twin Buttes. It’s about JR’s time in San Angelo, and how he went from hating it, to loving it, to all out missing it; wishing he could move back. It’s aptly titled "West Texas Blues."
Get Up Young Phoenix is dynamic, energetic, and fierce. It proudly features JR’s passionate - and often aggressive - vocals mixed with his over driven, fuzzy guitar riffs. Brandon layers on smooth, intricate bass lines, and Brian lays down consistent-yet-intelligent beats to keep everything together.
According to the press release, Sleeping Bag Studios described Fellowcraft as “distorted rockabilly…or maniac surf-music…these guys are un-caged, snarling, and on full-attack…sounds like Elvis turned up the amps and decided to reclaim Rock ’n’ Roll once and for all.” Brett Stewart of Tilting Windmill Studios described Get Up Young Phoenix as "a genuinely amazing independent rock album. As Fellowcraft’s full-length studio debut, it’s even more impressive….straight up rock and roll blues: think very early Black Keys. With distortion, pumping percussion, and scratchy, equally-distorted vocals… one of the finest exhibitions of blues I’ve heard in the independent scene in quite some time.”
Get Up Young Phoenix was recorded at Inner Ear Studios with the legendary recording and sound engineer, Don Zientara. Don has has worked with scores of artists including Rites of Spring, Scream, Minor Threat, Fugazi, and The Foo Fighters. After an intense weekend of recording, the album was mastered by T.J. Lipple, who has worked with Hemlines, Fugazi, Rollins Band, Clutch, and MGMT (among others).
"West Texas Blues," along with the rest of Get Up Young Phoenix, is now available on iTunes.

PermalinkWe do have a habit of getting a bit rowdy - here you go:
There’s a Tumbleweed a blowin’ down Ol’ Christoval Road
Mesquite trees on the hillside and rattlesnakes on the road
And they say that Father Time waits for no man, and no one tells him where to go
But the old man sure takes his sweet ass time, out here in San Angelo
We’re sittin in busted lawn chairs, drinkin’ and playin’ cards
All the stars are out tonight, you can see ‘em it aint that hard
And I swear there’s so many places you can go, when you aint got better places to go
I keep praying every night, Dear Lord; take me far from San Angelo
I’m sittin’ back in the city, with these lights and all these blocks
And I look back on my life and I wonder what I have lost, an’ I say...
Damn, I miss that little town. I miss her so.
I think it’s time to saddle up my horse and chase the sunset back to San Angelo
I’m sitting back in the Concho, the Arroyo with all my friends
Where the road goes on forever, and the party never ends!
Where the Twin Buttes Block the sun, it’s as as hot as Mexico
Damn it feels good
Damn it feels good (To be back)
Damn it feels good to back in San Angelo
