The Nutcracker has been a long-standing Christmas tradition in theatres across the world. Although not an initial success at its preview in 1892, the play gained popularity in the 1960s, and is now performed by most ballet companies across North America.
San Angelo Civic Ballet has been performing The Nutcracker since 1983. Marketing Manager, Sara Beth Terral said that is the reason the company was formed.
“We have grown to be much more now, but we are lucky to still be able to present that performance to the community every year,” she stated.
With over 60 participants, this 32nd annual production will have the largest cast ever for the Civic Ballet. There have also been some changes made to this year’s performance, including new choreography, characters, costumes, and a new storyline.
“Every ballet company does a little bit of a different version. There’s almost a hundred ways to do The Nutcracker. It will still be the classic story that everybody loves, but it will just be played out a little different. It will have some different scenes; some of the characters will be different than what we’ve had for the past few years,” Terral said.
“There is some humor added to it this year that I think the audience is really going to enjoy,” she noted. “There will be some fun surprises, but you will still get that great classic that you are used to seeing.”
Terral also added that they will be making it snow on stage this year, which is something that they haven’t been able to do for a while.
Additionally, Terral is very proud of her cast and production and feels very confident in this year’s play.
“The thing that is so gratifying for us is to work with these girls all the time and to see them move from the small parts, like angels and mice, all the way up through Sugar Plum Fairy and other lead roles, and see them grow and develop this year,” said Terral.
“You don’t have to be a ballet-lover to love The Nutcracker. It’s just a fun story. It’s very entertaining. It’s beautiful; it’s funny; and it’s fast-paced. There’s everything from tutus to a mouse king in a battle; it’s a great range of scenes.”
The Nutcracker will have four performances that will be held Dec. 18 through Dec. 20 at Lake View High School Auditorium.
Ticket prices are $17 for students/children/military/seniors, $20 for adult general seating, and $37 for premium seating.
However, due to the popularity of this event, the Civic Ballet has less than 30 tickets left. They will be opening up tonight’s dress rehearsal for $15. This performance will run just like a regular show and is a great opportunity for those who have missed getting tickets.
Tickets can be purchased at www.sanangelocivicballet.org/nutcracker-2015 or by calling (325)653-8877.
