The Recreation Division will host a series of three family-friendly movies this summer – two free showings at Kirby Park and a “Flick ‘n’ Float” at Love Municipal Pool.
The cinematic series begins with a free screening of “Paddington” at sundown (approximately 8:45 p.m.) Saturday, June 20, at Kirby Park, 1400 Edmund Blvd. Free snow cones will also be served. Released earlier this year, “Paddington” was the feature film debut of the lovable red-hatted and blue-jacketed bear from children’s books.
Kirby Park will also host a free showing of “When the Game Stands Tall” at sunset on Saturday, Aug. 22. Free hot dogs will be served. The 2014 movie recounts the journey of a legendary high school football coach who led his squad from obscurity to a 151-game winning streak that shattered all records for any American sport.
Families are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs, coolers and snacks to both of the Kirby Park showings, though they are reminded that glass containers are prohibited in city parks.
Between the movies in the park, the Recreation Division will host a “Flick ‘n’ Float” featuring “Big Hero 6” at sunset Saturday, July 23, at Love Municipal Pool. Attendees will be charged normal admission to the pool at 16 E. Avenue A – free for children younger than 3, $5 for ages 3-64, and $3 for seniors 65 and older. Free hot dogs will be served; outside food and drinks are prohibited at Love Municipal Pool, 16 E. Avenue A.
“Big Hero 6” is a Disney story about a young robotics prodigy who, when thrown into a dangerous plot, transforms his plus-sized inflatable robot and four friends into a band of high-tech heroes.
