Christmas decorations are out in full force this year, as several San Angelo homes and neighborhoods take it to the max to spread holiday cheer with impressive light displays.
Based on a reader survey in which we asked participants to provide the addresses of their favorite residential homes and neighborhoods, we’ve compiled a top 10 list that includes the blocks of some of the most vivid homes in San Angelo.
As one would expect from the survey results, which revealed that 74 percent of the 81 respondents prefer colored lights, the homes that made the top 10 this year are bright and well-lit in a variety of different colors.
A second question returned that 74 percent of respondents make a tradition of viewing lights with their families in residential neighborhoods, and 58 percent responded that they participate in the light tour along the river.
The homes we’ve selected were provided by readers, and span all areas of San Angelo. We hope you’ll enjoy the list, and if you have more to add, please share in the comments. The list below is in no particular order.
#1 Southland and Sunset
With a front yard filled with inflatable everything, a house in the 3600 block of Southland features reindeer, a penguin, Santa and an ornamental shimmer projected onto the front of the house. Houses with similar décor can be found just around the corner, as well as across the street making this a well-lit neighborhood.
#2 Sierra and Green Valley
The picture doesn't do this culdesac justice. Every house on the block is lit with colored or solid white lights, with strands running overhead across the street as well.
#3 Parkview Near Knickerbocker
If you’re into the shimmer of lights reflecting off the water, this is your stop. Several houses along this wet patch have lit white Christmas lights this year, illuminating the water’s surface in a uniform glow.
#4 The 3100 Block of Woodland
One of two known houses in San Angelo to have set their lights to music, this house is an obvious attraction. Shows are every 30 minutes from 7-10 p.m., and the lights sync up perfectly. Be careful coming in out, though—traffic around the house can get pretty backed up. Be sure to turn off your lights, don’t park in front of the house, and tune in to 106.9 fm.
#5 The 2000 Block of Hill St.
One of San Angelo’s best-known holiday houses has shrunk a bit in size this year as far as luminosity goes, but the home and yard are still extremely well lit. This is one of the homes in San Angelo where getting out and walking through the lights is actually encouraged, so if you’ve got kids and camera, you won’t want to miss this piece of San Angelo history.
#6 The 100 Block of Norma
The second house in San Angelo we’ve found to tune their lights to music, this home features a “Support Our Troops” theme with the names of various military groups spelled out in changing sequences on a lighted shooting star. Vibrant neon is the color scheme, and to hear the music, tune to 89.9 fm.
#7 Chadbourne and 19th St.
Almost as well lit as the Stripes next door to it, this house is nearly completely covered in strands of every color. There are reindeer on the roof, angels on the front, decked out trees and icicles.
#8 Marx and Bowie
Bows, palm trees and a nativity scene combine for a unique mix of holiday cheer at this intersection, where mostly white lights and a splash of color come together in a holiday scene.
#9 The 200 Block of 23rd
At least four houses came together to pull off this light spectacular, featuring everything from blow-up snowmen to stars, snowflakes and reindeer to icicle lights and glowing balls. There’s so much to see on this block you’d probably do best to get out and walk if you have little ones, otherwise you’ll have to drive very, very slowly.
#10 Preusser and Bell St.
Gift packages, giant nutcracker, lights and a carousel—this house has got it all. There are a few other houses in the area with Christmas decorations as well, but in the neighborhood, this house takes the cake.
