Fun at the Fort Seeks Youngsters for Summer Program

Fort Concho’s “Fun at the Fort” aims to put boredom out of business this summer. This year’s edition of children’s programming touches on eight topics, spanning from chuckwagon cooking and archeology to music and 1800s baseball.

All sessions but two (chuckwagon cooking and Southwest Indians) are from 9:30 a.m. until noon at the fort, 630 S. Oakes St.; costs $15 per child; and caters to ages 6-12. Space is limited, so participants are encouraged to register early at the fort. Registration forms are available at fortconcho.com under the “Educational Programs” link. The schedule of Fun at the Fort programs includes:

  • Striker to the Line! on Wednesday, June 11. Play base ball the way Fort Concho soldiers did in the 19th century.
  • Plants and Pioneers on Wednesday, June 18. Learn about medicinal, edible and useful Texas plants and engage in clever craft projects.
  • Fiddle Fire Friday on Friday, June 20. Learn to cook chuckwagon style … then enjoy the lunch you helped prepare. Starts at 9 a.m.
  • Walking Texas History on Wednesday, June 25. A unique walking tour of Fort Concho and of Texas history, from the time of Indians and conquistadors to soldiers and settlers.
  • Southwest Indians on Wednesday, June 25. Visit a tepee, sample Indian foods and create Native American crafts. From 1:30 p.m.-4 p.m.
  • Digging in the Dirt on Thursday, July 10. Dig for clues of how the Concho Valley’s earliest peoples lived. Plus create rock art and make a medicine bag.
  • Sound Off on Thursday, July 17. Listen to 19th-century music and play period instruments.
  • Join the Infantry! on Tuesday, July 22. Enlist for a day of marching, drilling and sampling rations.
