See the Army, old and new, at Saturday’s free Armed Forces Day celebration at Fort Concho from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 17.
The fort’s ambulance wagon, pulled by the site’s mules Tom and Mac, will be on duty, offering rides for guests, starting at the Barracks 1 Visitor Center, throughout the event. The fort is at 630 S. Oakes St.
Soldiers from the 344th Military Intelligence Battalion of the U.S. Army stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base will also be on site in full battle gear to demonstrate the 21st century military. The soldiers will bring a fully armed tactical vehicle, better known as a Humvee, that is designed for use over all types of roads, terrain and weather conditions. It can also be transported by air or helicopter as needed. Soldiers of the 344th will be available to explain the vehicle’s operation, features and extensive weaponry.
There is no charge for the Armed Forces Day program. Regular site admissions will be in effect to see the fort’s many historic displays and period buildings. Self-guided tours cost $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and military, and $1.50 for children ages 7-17. Guided tours at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. cost $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and military, and $3 for children ages 7-17. Children 6 and younger are admitted for free.
