Actors, actresses, parents and musical fans braved the icy roads to see “My Son Pinocchio,” performed by the San Angelo Broadway Academy (SABA) on Sunday afternoon at the Angelo Civic Theatre.
A little boy jumps up and down asking his mother if it was time to go inside. “It’s all we’ve heard all weekend,” the boy’s mother explains with a smile, “’When can we go see Pinocchio?’”
Angela Hill, the Director of SABA, is really proud of her students, especially the cast of Pinocchio, as they are all beginners and new to musicals.
“Pinoccio is an education performance workshop,” she explained. “They’ve had 10 short weeks to get ready and they’ve done a good job.”
“They [performers] are all new to musicals. At most they’ve been in the chorus,” said Hill, noting the performance provides a learning experience for the actors and actresses to try something new.
Hill explained that normally SABA does four big productions a year in the Coliseum, but this year they are working on finding a different date.
“We did two smaller shows this year to see about different weekends,” said Hill, “starting with Charlie Brown in October.”
As far as “My Son Pinocchio,” goes, Hill explains that the musical is special. Featuring performers ages eight through 17, it’s slightly different than many other plays.
“It’s the true spirit of a child,” Hill said, “you can truly see their passion.”
“Shrek” is the next musical SABA plans to put on, and casting will begin in January.
