Riverfest Features Raks Sanan Dancers

Last-minute cancellations of the carnival at Riverfest caused many interesting acts to be booked for afternoon festivities.

One such was the Raks Sanan dance troupe, who specialize in belly dance, hulu and a variety of other styles.

Many Riverfest attendees stopped by to watch and take pictures of the dancers in their colorful homemade costumes and variety of dance.

In honor of their sister mermaid statue near Celebration Bridge, they were dressed as mermaids and took on the aliases of Madison, Aquamarine, Merriweather, Hanna, and Myra.

“It’s colorful and they haven’t seen anything quite like us,” said Carrie Scott, the instructor for the dancers.

The Raks Sanan showed up early enough for the color run, and left around 3:00 p.m.

“We were cheering on the runners right over here,” said Merriweather.

All the Rask Sanan Mermaids said they had a great time performing for Riverfest.

The small troupe gets together at the Chicken Farm Art Center for weekly classes led by Carrie Scott.
