WATCH: Angelo State University Civil Engineering Degree Now Accredited

SAN ANGELO, TX – Angelo State University announced Wednesday that it received accreditation from the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission for the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree.

"The accreditation or our civil engineering program is the most important milestone in the department to date," said Dr. Don Topliff, provost and vice president for academic affairs. "Without ABET accreditation, our engineering graduates would not be able to achieve Professional Engineer credentials necessary for employment in an engineering firm. This accreditation, which by the way, came with absolutely no deficiencies, is a testament to the exceptional quality of the faculty and the training they are giving their students. I could not be prouder of the David L. Hirschfeld Department of Engineering."

Starting in 2014, the Civil Engineering Department has graduated 34 students. Upcoming students will include not only the accreditation but verification that their educational experience meets the global standard for technical education, enhancement of employment opportunities, support for future licensure, registration and certifications.

ABET also announced the accreditation is retroactive to October of 2018.

"This accreditation by the accreditation board of engineering and technologies accreditation commission enables Angelo State to extenuate our commitment to provide our students and graduates the opportunity to achieve success as citizens and professionals in the ever-critical STEM career fields in a global work force and in a global economy," said Angelo State University President Lt. General Ronnie Hawkins.

Major contributions to make this possible came from the Hirschfeld family. ASU thanked the family during the ceremony held Wednesday.

"On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff we thank you for your contributions." said President Hawkins. "May God continue to bless you, Angelo State, the great state of Texas, and the United States of America."
