SAN ANGELO — The San Angelo ISD school board Monday night officially named Dr. Chris Moran as the new superintendent, replacing Dr. Carl Dethloff, who has held the position since July 2015 and will retire at the end of December 2023.
The final approval was given at a special school board held last night, Monday, Dec. 4.
“I’ve heard nothing but good things from people that I’m connected with about Chris Moran and his family over the last three weeks,” Dr. Kingman said at the meeting. “I appreciate each of you as a board member to get us here. But I also want to reiterate how excited we are to have gotten Dr. Moran to join our team of eight and for his family coming to San Angelo. I think that this is a great hire for San Angelo ISD.”
“I spent many hours in prayer hoping that the right person would come,” Board Vice President Ami Mizell-Flint said. “I not only feel that the right person came, but the right spouse came. So, we are extremely excited, and all my fellow teachers out there, we are just ready for the future.”
Other board members echoed the sentiment, with Board Trustee Pam Duncan warmly welcoming Dr. Moran and expressing anticipation for working with him and his family in San Angelo.
Dr. Kyle Mills, another board trustee, highlighted the careful consideration that went into the decision-making process.
“It had been a lot of time praying and talking to people about what is best for our district and what we should do,” Dr. Mills said. “I feel very confident that we made an excellent decision, and we’re so glad to have (Dr. Moran) as part of the team. We look forward to all of the things that you are going to add to this district and all the difficult decisions you’re going to have to make. But, we know you will make the right decisions, and we are here to support you as well.”
Responding to the warm welcome, Dr. Moran expressed gratitude and humility. “I want you to know that I feel very grateful and humbled to join you (San Angelo ISD). I look forward to working with the staff and board that is here.”
Dr. Moran brings a wealth of experience to the position. Starting his career as a teacher and basketball coach, he has held roles such as assistant principal and principal before serving as the Superintendent of Schools for Brownsboro ISD and later Whitehouse ISD in 2016.
With approximately 5,000 students and 800 employees in Whitehouse ISD, Dr. Moran's move to San Angelo ISD represents a promotion, as the district is almost three times larger.
He is a graduate of Evangel University and The University of Texas at Tyler, earning his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2005.
Dr. Moran is married to Christa and is a proud father of four children and a grandfather of two.
He is actively involved in local and state committees, holding positions such as Vice President of the Texas Association of School Administrators, Texas Association of School Administrators Executive Committee member, SUPERnet Internet Consortium Managing Board Chair, and serving on the Texas Education Agency Commissioner’s Cabinet.
His commitment to education has earned him accolades, including Superintendent of the Year in Region 7 in 2019 and High School Principal of the Year for Region VII in 2006.
Dr. Moran is known for his belief in clear, concise communication and a focus on strategic planning to improve student outcomes while managing future district growth.
