Mayor Gunter to Proclaim December 6 San Angelo READS! Day

SAN ANGELO - In a move to promote literacy and foster a love for reading in the community, Mayor Brenda Gunter is set to proclaim Dec. 6, 2023, as San Angelo READS! Day.

The official proclamation is scheduled to take place at 8 a.m. outside City Hall located at 72 W. College Ave.

Community leaders will come together to make this proclamation, marking the 4th annual San Angelo READS! Day.

The goal of San Angelo READS! is to increase awareness of the importance of literacy, and to inspire a love for reading.

This initiative is driven by statistics that show how vitally important literacy is to providing all students with the opportunities to succeed at a young age.

San Angelo READS! is grounded in the belief that encouraging regular reading habits can significantly impact the academic success of children and teenagers.

Children and teenagers who read for pleasure on a daily or weekly basis score better on reading and writing tests than infrequent or non-readers, information stated.

"San Angelo ISD is committed to building literacy skills that create students who are prepared for future success and thus build a better tomorrow for our students and community," the district stated.

Individuals can contribute by reading with students, donating books to children in need, or supporting various literacy programs within the community.
