LUBBOCK, TX — Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently appointed a new student regent to the Texas Tech University Board of Regents for the 2023-24 Academic year. Announced on Tuesday, June 13, Steeley Smith, a Concho Valley native from Mason, Texas, will join the Board of Regents effective immediately.
Per Greg Abbott’s office, “Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Steeley Smith as the student regent for the Texas Tech University System for a term set to expire on May 31, 2024.”
“Steeley Smith of Lubbock received a Master of Arts in Media and Mass Communications and a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Communications, with minors in agricultural business management and political science from Texas Tech University. She is currently pursuing a Master of Agribusiness from Texas Tech University,” the Governor’s office continued.
Smith is a graduate of Mason High School as well as a graduate and graduate student at Texas Tech. She becomes the 18th student to serve on the Board of Regents and the sixth student from Texas Tech University.
“Steeley is driven, ambitious, and hard-working. All characteristics that will serve her well as the student regent,” said Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec. “Her involvement as a student at Texas Tech and experience working in various government and public service offices will greatly benefit Steeley in this role. I am pleased she has been appointed to the Board and expect she will find much success representing the viewpoints of our diverse student bodies.”
She also served as the advertising sales manager for the Agriculturalist, a student publication on campus, where she won two different honors for feature writing and student publication. Smith graduated summa cum laude with a Master of Arts degree and spent a year in the TTU School of Law, where she was heavily involved in several programs, including the Organization of Women Law Students, Raider Bar Association, Texas Young Lawyers Association and State Bar of Texas, among others.
Currently, Smith serves as the coordinator for the Texas Tech Government & Public Service Internship Program. She oversees networking and business development with United States Capitol and Texas Capitol offices and manages student interns who represent Texas Tech University in Washington, D.C., and Austin.
Steeley served as a public policy intern for U.S. Representative Michael Conaway (TX-11) and campaign assistant for U.S. Representative Jody Arrington (TX-19).
Smith will serve a one-year term, effective immediately and set to expire on May 31, 2024. Her first Board of Regents meeting will take place Aug. 10-11 at the TTU System Building in Lubbock. She replaces Hani Michael Annabi of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso, who was appointed in 2022.
