Angelo State University Honors Local Neurosurgeon as Veteran of the Year

SAN ANGELO – Dr. Robert LeGrand, a well-known local physician and retired U.S. Air Force major, was named Angelo State University’s 2021 Remembering Angelo’s Military (R.A.M.) Veteran of the Year during ASU’s annual Veterans Day Luncheon Thursday in the Houston Harte University Center.

A native of North Carolina, LeGrand moved to San Angelo in 1976 as the city’s first permanent neurosurgeon. Since his arrival in West Texas, he has treated more than 40,000 patients at all three local hospitals. He is a graduate of Wake Forest University and received his medical degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He served as an Air Force flight surgeon from 1970-72, including a year of duty in Vietnam, where he received two Distinguished Flying Crosses, three Air Medals and a Bronze Star.

“Dr Robert LeGrand epitomizes service before self – to the nation and to our veterans at Angelo State University,” said Susan Williams, ASU director of military and veteran affairs. “We are honored and humbled to have this opportunity to recognize the support he continually gives to our students and to our campus.”

LeGrand and his wife, Jean Ann, a 1972 ASU alumna, have maintained strong ties to Angelo State. In addition to being active members of the President’s Circle, Ram Club and Alumni Association Century Club, they established an endowment that funds multiple scholarships for incoming freshmen from area communities within a 150-mile radius of San Angelo. In recognition of other generous gifts to ASU, their name adorns the LeGrand Alumni and Visitors Center and the LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field football/track and field complex.
