Fort Stockton ISD Reverses Mask Mandate After Court Ruling

FORT STOCKTON, TX –– Hours after announcing a district-wide mask mandate Fort Stockton ISD reversed its decision.

The decision came after the Texas Supreme Court ruled the power to mandate masks lies with the governor. The school district had previously voted unanimously to enforce masks for all students, staff, and visitors.

"Our school attorneys advised that litigation will likely continue beyond the state level," said the school district in a statement. "However is a Public School District of Texas, we will hold true to the Board's commitment that the decision was made "in lieu" of the legality of GA-38."

Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Zamora thanked students and staff who quickly adjusted to the mask mandate.

"I comment the FSISD Board for leaving no doubt about how much they care for our school community," said Zamora. "It is my hope all Pecos County residents take note of the noble actions of the FSISD Board of Trustees and are inspired to help fight this disease by choosing to wear a mask when appropriate."

According to Zamora, the school board will meet on August 30th to discuss incentives for staff and students that pledge to wear masks in school.

"It is an honor to serve the community of Fort Stockton," said Zamora. "Together, we will continue to keep our children safe, to provide a first-class education, and prepare them to overcome the challenges that may lie ahead."
