FORSAN, TX -- A 4th-grade teacher in Forsan has been selected as the state's Conservation Teacher of the Year.
In addition to the distinguished honor, Ms. Sherlyn Welch, who teaches science at Forsan Elementary School, was awarded a donation that will allow her to conduct conservation experiments with her students.
Students at Forsan Elementary also received awards for their entries in an annual poster contest. The theme for this year was “Healthy Trees Equal Healthy Communities.”
Students were asked to create posters to demonstrate how trees connect with communities, help clean the air, provide shade to conserve water and protect soil from erosion.
Three students in Ms. Welch's class placed first place in their division, they were identified as Summer Long, Taelor Worley, and P’Jae Yabes.
Three students in Ms.Whitney Gressett’s 5th-grade class also placed first place in their division, They were Aubrey Dennis, Max Myers, and Paxton Skaggs.
Paxton Skaggs and Taelor Worley projects were additionally selected Area Finalists and would go on to compete with other finalists in Area 2.
Skaggs would then receive 2nd place for his poster and will receive a special plaque from the Texas Soil and Water Conservation District Directors for his achievement.
