San Angelo ISD Launches Reading Initiative Wednesday

SAN ANGELO, TX – The San Angelo Independent School District has announced a new reading initiative to inspire a love of reading in the community.

The inititiative dubbed San Angelo READS! will officially kick off on Wednesday, December 9th.

Studies show that children who do not read on grade level by the end of the 3rd grade only have a 1 in 8 chance of catching up to other students who are reading within their grade level and are 4 times more likely to drop out of school.

San Angelo elementary schools will participate in the day with special activities for students including:

  • fun read alouds
  • dressing up as their favorite literary characters
  • book vending machines

Third graders will also receive a surprise book compliments of the San Angelo Area Foundation.

"San Angelo ISD is committed to building literacy skills which create students who are prepared for future successes and thus building a better tomorrow for our students and community!', said SAISD in a statement.
