Committee Proposes New Name for Robert E. Lee High School

MIDLAND, TX — The Citizen’s Renaming Committee has selected the top new name for Robert E. Lee high school in Midland after weeks of debate.

On Thursday night the committee voted to elect the Legacy of Equality and Excellence (L.E.E.) High School as the winning selection.

Back in July, the school board voted 6-1 to rename the school that had been part of the community since 1961.

To find a new name, the school created a 23-person committee that selected three possible new names that would be presented to the school board for consideration.

The top choice was decided in the following manner according to Facebook posts by committee members.

  • 12 – Legacy of Equality and Excellence (L.E.E.) High School
  • 9 – Tall City High School
  • 1 – Midland Carver Lee High School

At this time it is not guaranteed that the school board will go with the committee’s top choice.

The acronym L.E.E. was previously used to rename a high school in North East ISD that was also named after the confederate general in 2017.
