Sonora and Christoval Confirm Student at Football Game Tested Positive for COVID-19

SONORA, TX – Sonora Independent School District officials announced a positive COVID-19 case connected to a student from the schools secondary campus.

Ross Aschenbeck, superintendent of the school district, announced via a letter posted to the Sonora ISD Facebook page on Monday evening that  “a person who tested positive for COVID-19 was present on the secondary campus from Sept. 9-11 and it is possible that you / your child could have been exposed to the coronavirus during that period.”

The letter states that the district is aware of the situation, and is currently “in the process of determining what individuals were likely to have come into close contact with this individual.”

If a person is determined to have been one of those who came into close contact with the individual, “you will be contacted directly by SISD with further direction.”

“While we do not have reason to believe that those who were not in close contact with the infected individual have reason to be concerned, we ask that you, as always, watch for symptoms of COVID-19,” according to the letter by Aschenbeck.

On Monday, Christoval ISD Athletics Director Scott Richardson also announced that a student from Sonora who played in Friday nights game against the Cougars has tested positive for COVID-19.

The release states Christoval ISD is conducting an investigation to determine if any players, coaches, or staff members were considered to be close contact cases for possible quarantine.

The school says faculty and staff are taking measures to sanitize all equipment and facilities as day-to-day use continues on campus.
