San Angelo ISD Changes Trustee District Boundaries to Accommodate One Board Member

SAN ANGELO, TX -- The San Angelo Independent School District board of trustees Monday voted unanimously to adjust boundaries to single member districts three and six so board member Gerard Gallegos can continue serving on the board until a regular trustee election in May 2019.

According to the SAISD, Gallegos has served on the board for 13 years and was elected by voters in single member district six in 2015.  Gallegos apparently moved recently from single member district six to a residence that was located in single member district three. The board of trustees adjusted the district boundaries so that Gallegos can continue to serve on the board legally until the May 4, 2019 election.

State law requires school board trustees to live in the district they serve and also to live in the single member district they represent.  Had the school board not adjusted the district boundaries, Gallegos would have had to resign his seat on the school board.

According to the SAISD website, “The Board approved this change in order to give effect to the wishes of the voters and to allow the status quo to remain in place until the May 4, 2019 trustee election. The District’s Administration will be working with Tom Green County to ensure a smooth transition for voters in the coming election cycle.”

There are six single member districts in the San Angelo ISD.  One seat is elected at large. Trustees serve four-year staggered terms and elections are held the first Saturday in May of odd numbered years.
