Columbus Day or Indigenous People's Day?
SAN ANGELO, TX -- Banks and government offices are closed today in observance of Columbus Day in San Angelo, but the holiday is controversial in Austin, TX and other places as well.
In Austin, the city council last year passed a resolution recognizing the second Monday in October as Indigenous People's Day.
KTXS is reporting that the Austin resolution also said the city of Austin has a "responsibility to oppose the systematic racism towards Indigenous People in the United States, which perpetuates high rates of poverty and income inequality, exacerbating disproportionate health, education, and social crises."
Historically, Columbus landed on what is now the island of Hispanolia which includes the counties of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
In San Angelo, city, county, state and federal offices are closed today as are San Angelo ISD schools.
