Angelo State University Designated a National College of Distinction

SAN ANGELO, TX — (Press Release) Angelo State University is one of only 375 schools, representing 45 states, named a 2018-19 “College of Distinction” by the Colleges of Distinction print and online college guide that recognizes colleges and universities implementing best practices in higher education.

ASU is also one of only four Texas public universities to earn the national “College of Distinction” designation out of 15 total Texas institutions on the list. Additionally, ASU has been named a “Texas College of Distinction” and a “Public College of Distinction” – and has received specific recognition for its business, education and nursing programs based on accreditation, breadth of program and a track record for success.

Schools are selected for the various designations for demonstrating excellence in four key areas identified by Colleges of Distinction as the “four distinctions:”

  • Engaged students
  • Great teaching
  • Vibrant community
  • Successful outcomes

According to CollegesOfDistinction.com, “To be designated a ‘college of distinction,’ a school’s curriculum must emphasize such core competencies as critical thinking, writing, oral skills, research, and global perspectives. They must also offer dynamic out-of-classroom learning and study abroad programs. Our process is objective, in-depth, and qualitative; however, we also take into account such quantitative data as class-size statistics, faculty-to-student ratio, plus retention and four-year graduation rates.”

ASU President Brian J. May said, “This particular recognition is especially gratifying because Colleges of Distinction stresses excellence in the same areas that we do here at Angelo State. We pride ourselves in engaging our students to enhance their personal development, providing exceptional teaching and a lively campus community, and preparing our graduates for success in their careers and in life. To be nationally recognized for these efforts is a great icing on the cake.”

The primary goal of Colleges of Distinction is to “connect individual students to information that empowers them to make confident choices from among the best colleges in our nation.”

To that end, an in-depth profile of ASU will be published in the 2018-19 Colleges of Distinction guidebook and is already posted on the CollegesOfDistinction.com website, which provides the information to college-bound students, their parents and high school counselors without a subscription fee.
