ASU Announces Holland Symposium Contest Winners

 

Angelo State University art/graphic design major Taylor Seaton of Big Spring has been awarded the top prize in the 2015 University Symposium Student Contest that is conducted each year in conjunction with ASU’s E. James Holland University Symposium on American Values said a press release Tuesday.

The 2015 symposium featured retired NASA and Air Force Col. Eileen Collins, whose presentations were themed “Space Exploration and American Values.” Student contest entries were judged on relation to the theme, creativity, originality, depth of thought and technical competency.

Seaton won first place and a $225 prize for her digital print “A Walk in Space.” Second place and $125 went to Armando Mendoza of Del Rio for his work titled “Explore.” Third place and $75 was awarded to Jacob Starnes of San Angelo for his painting. Graphic design students Fabian Torres of San Angelo, Allison Romo of Hereford and Melanie Tamez of Eden each received honorable mention and $25 for their entries.

All entries will be on public display now through Friday, Feb. 12, in the UC Art Gallery in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. An awards ceremony honoring the winners and all student participants will run from 4-5 p.m. Feb. 12 in the UC Art Gallery. Both the exhibition and the awards ceremony are free and open to the public.

The judge for this year’s contest was Chris Stewart, chair of ASU’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts.
