West Texas Collection to Open New Exhibit

Angelo State University’s Ralph R. Chase West Texas Collection will host the opening of its new exhibit, “Buildings from the Past: A Foundation for the Future,” at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

The exhibit features old black-and-white photos of historic buildings in downtown San Angelo presented alongside new color photos of current local businesses to highlight the building preservation efforts. Information about the history of the buildings is also included.

Featured historic buildings include Myers Drug, Fat Boss’s Pub and the Cactus Hotel, along with other saloons, transportation hubs, public buildings, grocery stores and the “speakeasy” that was located on the second floor of the R.E. Harris Drug Store. These are the buildings, then and now, that influenced the growth of San Angelo and the surrounding area.

The opening of the exhibit will take place in conjunction with the 2015 Annual Meeting of the ASU Friends of the Porter Henderson Library and West Texas Collection. Also included in the meeting program will be a presentation by Del Velasquez, executive director of Downtown San Angelo Inc., on “Downtown Preservation.”

The Friends group will also present its Joe Bill Lee Scholarship to a deserving ASU student employed by the Porter Henderson Library or West Texas Collection.

All the activities will be in the West Texas Collection gallery area on the second floor of the University Center and are open free to the public.
