Angelo State University’s 2015 Homecoming Week will include a variety of student and alumni events beginning Sunday, Oct. 11, and culminating Saturday, Oct. 17, with the Homecoming football game between the ASU Rams and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
This year’s Homecoming theme is “Roscoe Goes on a Magical Adventure.” Homecoming Week is a collaboration of the Alumni Association, the Center for Student Involvement (CSI), ASU Athletics and numerous student organizations, which compete for the Spirit Stick, given to the group that shows the most spirit and contributes the most to the many tasks required to make Homecoming Week a success.
The majority of events will take place Friday, Oct. 16, and Saturday, Oct. 17, highlighted by the ASU Alumni Association’s annual Homecoming Dinner on Friday in the Houston Harte University Center’s C.J. Davidson Conference Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. Activities will begin with a social gathering at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available from the Alumni Association for $60 per person or $100 per couple.
At the dinner, Lloyd Norris, Class of 1973 and former chairman of the board for Town & Country Food Stores, will be honored as the 2015 Distinguished Alumnus. Alex Decuir, voted Mr. San Angelo College in 1964, will be recognized as the 2015 Golden Ex of the Year. Dr. Kathryn Artnak, a member of the nursing faculty from 1995-2014, will be honored as the 2015 Outstanding Retired Faculty and Air Force Maj. Orlando Lopez, Class of 2003, will be recognized as the 2015 Distinguished ROTC Alumnus.
Also recognized will be Tia Agan, a field experience advisor for ASU’s College of Education, as the 2015 Distinguished Carr Scholar Alumna; Dr. John Klingemann, chair of the Department of History and interim chair of the Department of Communication and Mass Media, for 2015 Distinguished Faculty Achievement; Brandy Hawkins, ASU’s director of grants and operations, as 2015 Outstanding Staff; and Jeremy Bryant, the voice of ASU athletics, as 2015 Honorary Alumnus.
Also on Friday, students, faculty and alumni will gather at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena, 2235 S. Jackson St., for a pep rally that will kickoff immediately following a Rambelles volleyball game. A spirit march led by ASU’s ROTC cadets will begin at 9 p.m. and will go from the pep rally site to the annual Homecoming Bonfire in the open area near Foster Field. Since 1975, ASU’s Air Force ROTC Detachment 847 has built the bonfire. The pep rally will also include a sign contest and the finals of a step-style dance contest.
On Saturday, Oct. 17, the annual ASU Homecoming Parade will wind through downtown San Angelo beginning at 11 a.m. at Harris Avenue and Oakes Street. It will be followed by the Alumni Association’s Ram Jam at 4:30 p.m. at the LeGrand Alumni and Visitors Center, 1620 University Ave.
The Rams’ football game against Texas A&M-Kingsville will begin at 7 p.m. at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field, 2302 Phil George Drive. At halftime, the Homecoming Court will be presented, the queen and king will be named and the Spirit Stick will be given to the student organization judged most spirited.
This year, the Student Government Association and Ram Fam will introduce a new Ram Remembrance tradition to Homecoming Week. A memorial ceremony to honor the passing of students, faculty, staff and alumni in the past year will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the LeGrand Alumni and Visitors Center.
Homecoming Week activities will actually begin on Sunday, Oct. 11, with a brisket cook-off that starts at 9 a.m., sponsored by the ASU Homecoming Committee. The committee also will host a reception to present the Homecoming king and queen nominees at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct.12, in the Davidson Center. The step show preliminaries will start at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the Davidson Center. On Thursday, Oct. 15, a Knockerball Tournament will run from 2 to 7:30 p.m. at the Campus Green, and a Blue & Gold Party will begin at 7 p.m. near the Pavilion.
