Angelo State announced in a press release Monday that it will provide more than 1,200 local and area fourth graders an up-close look at some of the wonders of science during "Science Days!" on Sept. 29 and Oct. 1, 6, 8, 13 and 15. The event will be held in the Cavness Science Building, 2460 Dena Drive.
During Science Days!, students can view specimens from each of ASU’s Natural History Collections (ASNHC), which shows the variety of wildlife found in the Concho Valley. They will also get to participate in several hands-on biology and chemistry experiments and interesting math activities, including the new sun printing activities hosted by educators from the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. Following lunch, students won’t want to miss the grand finale, a chemistry magic show in Room 100 of the Cavness Building starting at 12:20 p.m. Activities will begin at 9:20 a.m. each day.
ASU faculty, staff and students from the Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry and Mathematics Departments are conducting the activities, and students from ASU’s Tri-Beta biology honor society and San Angelo Central High School will also provide volunteer support.
According to the ASU press release, “the Science Days! program is intended to provide elementary students with the opportunity to experience science in an educational setting and to interest them in science at an early age. Studies show that once students reach the upper elementary grades, it is much harder to stimulate their interest in the sciences. Since its inception in 2006, the Science Days! program has hosted more than 12,000 local and area fourth graders.”
Students from Angelo Catholic, Fannin, Goliad and Reagan elementary schools will attend on Sept. 29; Glenmore, San Angelo Christian, San Jacinto and Santa Rita elementary students will attend on Oct. 1; students from Alta Loma, Belaire and Bradford elementary schools will attend on Oct. 6; Reagan ISD elementary students will attend on Oct. 8; students from Lamar and Fort Concho elementary schools will attend Oct. 13; and Snyder ISD elementary students will attend on Oct. 15.
ASNHC collections manager Marcia Revelez organizes the Science Days! program during each fall and spring semester. Area elementary schools interested in participating in future sessions of Science Days! can contact her at 325-486-6699 or [email protected].
